Introduction to Comcare's privacy principles

Comcare is required to comply with the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act) when dealing with an individual’s personal information.

The Information Privacy Principles (IPPs) contained in section 14 of the Privacy Act regulate how Comcare collects, stores, provides access to, uses and discloses personal information.

The Privacy Act also gives you you a number of rights designed to protect your privacy.

What is 'personal information'?

Personal information is defined in section 6 of the Privacy Act as information or opinion about an individual whose identity is apparent or can be reasonably ascertained from the information or opinion.

Some examples of personal information include:

  • names, addresses, phone numbers or email addresses
  • medical certificates, clinical notes or medical reports
  • payslips and bank statements
  • witness statements

The definition of personal information only relates to natural persons (living persons). It does not extend to other legal persons, such as companies.
