Types of medical providers

You can seek medical treatment for a work-related injury or illness from a range of medical providers.

There are two groups of medical providers (as defined under the SRC Act) with a different role to play:

Legally qualified medical practitioner General practitioners, specialists (e.g. orthopedic surgeons, neurologists and psychiatrists) and dentists.
  • Provide treatment
  • Refer you for treatment
  • Assess your return-to-work capability
  • Provide advice on alternative duties or workplace modifications
  • Certify you fit or unfit for return-to-work
Allied health provider Physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths and massage therapists.
