How does Comcare protect my privacy?

Why does Comcare collect personal information?

Comcare collects personal information about you in order to make sure you are paid correctly and receive the services you require.

How is my privacy protected?

Comcare is covered by the Privacy Act 1988. The Privacy Act gives you a number of rights, including the following:

  • you must be told why your personal information is being collected and whether it can be given to anyone else
  • you have the right to see what information is held about you and have it corrected if it is incorrect or out of date (the Freedom of Information Act 1982 also covers this)
  • you have the right to have your personal information stored securely and protected from unauthorised access or misuse
  • you have the right to know how your personal information will be used
  • if you believe your privacy has been infringed you can make a complaint.

What about Tax File Numbers?

If you give Comcare a Tax File Number we must keep it secure. Because of the security Comcare gives to Tax File Numbers, if you lose yours we will not be able to tell you what it is. You will have to ask the Australian Taxation Office.

Worried about Privacy?

If you have a question about privacy, confidentiality or access to information, ask to be put in touch with the Comcare Privacy Officer.

If you think Comcare has breached your privacy or confidentiality, you can make a complaint to Comcare. Your complaint will be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. If you are not satisfied with Comcare's investigation you can make a complaint to the Federal Privacy Commissioner.
