Leading through a focus on people flourishing
Being inspired by her father’s story of courage and determination to get back to work after suffering a crippling injury taught Therese that work really matters to people.  Therese will share her experience of assisting unemployed people to find suitable and lasting employment by helping them to overcome barriers and to achieve their potential. Her approach is to empower individuals and equip them with the work skills needed to secure employment and succeed in the workplace. Often, all people need is simple resources and encouragement to discover their own unique strengths.

Concurrent keynote presentation: Judith Hackitt, CBE, Chair of the Health and Safety Commossion, United Kingdom
As a key driver of successful health and safety legislation in the UK, Judith shares her philosophy in discussion with Paul O’Connor, Chief Executive Officer of Comcare. She describes employers who don’t get the health and safety message as ‘laggards’ who often only respond to severe penalties to do the right thing in the workplace.

Occupational Health and Safety specialist, Paul Baulch, will share his experiences from an Australian perspective.

Building capability to support our people—a collaborative approach.
Case study: Department of Defence
Defence employs over 19 000 Australian public service employees across Australia. At any given time around 500 are ill or injured, and supported by case managers to return to work. This session will focus on the partnership achievements and ongoing collaboration between the Department of Defence and Comcare to establish, implement and progress the Comcare/Defence Premium injury management and claims management improvement strategy 2010-2012. Neville will outline the initiatives planned for the remainder of 2011 to improve performance in safety and workers’ compensation, and thus reduce associated costs.

Building a positive and resilient organisation— positive psychology for leaders
If you ask most people what they’d like more of in life the majority will refer, in some way or other, to happiness. We all want to experience more of it in our personal lives but many don’t even consider that it might also be possible in our working lives.  Yet happiness at work is distinctly possible and should be a primary goal for all individuals, managers and organisations—because happiness and positivity at work leads to innumerable benefits for everyone involved. This session will outline the powerful approach that The Happiness Institute has applied to improve productivity and lower absenteeism in the workplace.

After returning from the Vietnam war severely hearing impaired Richard found a new purpose for his public speaking talents and helped improve the lives of disabled people. This session will inspire you to tap into your music within to make a difference and to build a legacy for the future.

Alcohol in the workplace
Alcohol is the most widely used recreational drug in Australia and alcohol-related problems can be present in almost every workplace. Alcohol can affect relationships, safety and productivity in the workplace. Excessive alcohol use can affect the general health and wellbeing of workers and impact their family, friends and the wider community. This session will provide strategies that employers can adopt to minimise the issues and risks around alcohol and the workplace.

Why do sports people recover so quickly from injury?
Elite sports people generally have a relatively smooth and quick return to peak performance in comparison to workers’ compensation injuries. This session will outline strategies of recovery utilised by elite sports teams that can be transfered into workplace injury recovery.

Paul was on exercise as a Navy diver in Sydney Harbour when he was attacked by a bull shark resulting in the loss of his right leg and hand. Paul's recovery is an inspirational story of mental and physical courage. Paul will speak from the heart about overcoming adversity to beat the odds through the combination of physical strength, mental toughness and the sheer will to live. Improvise...Adapt...Overcome... has become his mantra.

Dave was working as a soil technician when he suffered a serious injury in 2004. As a result of his own workplace injuries he has developed a passion for improving OHS standards and teaching healthy work practices. Dave will share his experience and expertise in a bid to spread the safety message.

Future of worker health
Working arrangements are changing—as the workforce is ageing and diversifying, new risks are emerging while old risks are persisting. Occupational health and safety (OHS) has typically been inward looking, not responsive to the changes in society around it. This session will report on the Institute for Safety, Compensation and Recovery Research’s Futures Initiative in which horizon scanning was undertaken to determine broader trends likely to influence OHS and personal injury compensation. This research was then used as triggers for stakeholder consultation through online blogs and workshop sessions at which scenarios for 2035 were developed.

21st century work and workplace health
Comcare has a focus on preventing harm in federal workplaces and promoting worker health, wellbeing and resilience. Delivering on these priorities means responding to the changing nature of work, the ageing workforce and emerging work health issues such as the risks of sedentary work. This session will look at the 21st century workplace and the challenge for work communities to promote the health benefits of work, reduce exposure to physical and psychosocial hazards, and enhance opportunities for health and wellbeing.

Richard will share his experience of Service Canada’s operations and evolution to establish a culture of service excellence throughout the organisation.
