Neville Tomkins, First Assistant Secretary Defence People Solutions, Department of Defence Building capability to support our people—a collaborative approach. Case study: Department of Defence Defence employs over 19 000 Australian public service employees across Australia. At any given time around 500 are ill or injured, and supported by case managers to return to work. This session will focus on the partnership achievements and ongoing collaboration between the Department of Defence and Comcare to establish, implement and progress the Comcare/Defence Premium injury management and claims management improvement strategy 2010-2012. Neville will outline the initiatives planned for the remainder of 2011 to improve performance in safety and workers’ compensation, and thus reduce associated costs.

This session will report on the Institute for Safety, Compensation and Recovery Research’s Futures Initiative in which horizon scanning was undertaken to determine broader trends likely to influence OHS and personal injury compensation.
