A message on International Day of People with a Disability from Comcare CEO, Paul O’Connor

This Saturday, 3 December we celebrate International Day of People with a Disability. The day aims to promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being. Throughout the Australian Public Service meetings and activities are being held over the next couple of weeks to celebrate and acknowledge this event.

Calls to action are an essential part of the momentum International Day of People with Disability brings. This is critical in the area of employment which creates independence and real empowerment, addressing the high levels of poverty experienced by many people with disability in this country.

At Comcare the employment of people with a disability is an important part of our forward planning. Consider the business facts:

  • 90 per cent of people with disability are as productive, or more productive, than other workers
  • 98 per cent have average or superior safety records
  • 86 per cent have average or superior attendance records.

All of us can do more in this area. I invite you to do so.

Case studies are an effective way to break down some of the barriers in the area of people with a disability. We are sharing personal stories on what is happening in the Comcare community. We can learn much from these stories about the importance of work to our health and wellbeing and the mutual gains to individuals, their families and their organisations from actively supporting those with a disability in the workplace.
