Comcare CEO Paul O’Connor said it was a privilege to be part of the Vinnie’s Sleep Out Challenge in Canberra last night.
Among those who joined the sleep out last night were Dr Ian Watt (Defence), Paul O’Connor (Comcare), Kathryn Campbell (Human Services), Steve Sedgwick (APS Commissioner) and Andrew Metcalfe (Immigration & Citizenship).
He said the discomfort of sleeping rough in Canberra’s below zero temperatures, was a small price to pay for a better awareness and understanding of the plight of homeless people in the National Capital.
“To me a highlight was sharing time with some of the homeless people who are being helped by Vinnies to get back on their feet again after some harrowing experiences.
“For many of us not used to sleeping rough, a night in the open with very few comforts really highlights what many less fortunate Australians go through each and every night, no matter what the weather conditions.
“Last night brought home to me the real despair faced by many homeless people who need our help and support to get back on their feet”, Mr O’Connor said.
