The Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission has congratulated federal employers that have won recognition in the 5th Annual Safe Work Australia Awards presented in Canberra yesterday.
SRCC Chairman, Peter Henneken, said he was delighted that two federal employers had won award categories recognising the innovation and effectiveness of their programs to improve safety.
“The SRCC’s focus is on encouraging federal employers to actively make sure that health and safety at work are the first consideration, so that workers can go home safely at the end of each day.”
“I’m delighted that the two winners we recognised in our own awards as having shown exceptional leadership have also been recognised in the National Safe Work Australia Awards.”
The two federal workplaces recognised were the Australian Institute of Marine Science for developing a safety system for crew undertaking a baseline environmental study at Scott Reef north of Broome, and Australian air Express for re-designing its freight handing systems to reduce injuries to workers.
Mr Henneken said it was also a good opportunity to remind federal employers that nominations to enter the 2010 SRCC safety awards had been extended until 11 May 2010.
“This year a new award category has been introduced to recognise organisations that promote health and wellbeing in the workplace – this is well before employees are affected by injury.”
The SRCC is also adding a new category to its rehabilitation and return to work award to recognise individuals who are making a difference to getting workers back to work after an injury occurs.
The 10th annual SRCC Awards will be held in Canberra on 23 September 2010.
The SRCC introduced its annual safety awards in 2001 to encourage continuous improvement in injury prevention.
The SRCC is the Commonwealth’s workplace health and safety regulator, and holds annual awards for best practice in health, safety and return-to-work programs in the federal public service, the Australian Defence Force and national companies in the Comcare scheme.
