A number of changes to the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 came into effect on 7 December 2011.
The changes include:
- the reintroduction of compensation for injuries sustained during an ordinary recess—such as a lunch break
- the introduction of coverage for certain employees working outside Australia where the Minister declares the country or class of employee covered by legislative instrument
- ongoing compensation for medical expenses even if payment of other compensation is suspended
- access to the Consolidated Revenue Fund to pay compensation for certain long latency diseases
- enabling development of regulations that will prescribe time limits for claims determinations and reconsiderations.
