Recovery and return to work

 

Work is good for our health and wellbeing. Being off work for long periods not only has serious health effects, it is also one of the greatest known risks to public health. Work is also one of the most effective means of improving the wellbeing of individuals, their families and communities.

Returning to work after an injury or illness helps an individual recover and reduces the risk of long-term disability. Effective workplace rehabilitation benefits both the employer and worker.

Workplace rehabilitation

Employers are responsible for a workplace’s rehabilitation of injured workers. Workplace rehabilitation helps an injured worker stay at work or return to pre-injury employment as quickly as possible. It is a managed process that involves early intervention with appropriate, adequate and timely services based on assessed needs.

Participation is critical

Being employed is an important part of social inclusion and employers need to develop and deliver policies that address barriers to employment, provide additional assistance and make sure injured workers are treated with respect and dignity.

Individually tailored solutions to workplace rehabilitation allow employers to meet their obligations under the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 (SRC Act), deliver greater productivity, improve workforce participation and increase social inclusion.
