First Aid Infection Control


First aid room standard procedures

Hygiene

 

 

 

  • wash hands before and after giving first aid treatment
  • cover skin cuts or abrasions with waterproof dressings
  • wear disposable gloves during treatment procedures
  • do not eat, drink or smoke in a first aid area
  • wash hands after using toilet.

 

 

Spillages of blood or other bodily fluids

  • wear disposable gloves when cleaning up spilt body fluids
  • attend to spillages without delay
  • use absorbent material to absorb the bulk of spilt fluids
  • dispose of spilt body fluids in a leak-proof, sealed waste bag
 

Exposure to blood or bodily fluids

  • wash blood away from area of skin penetration with soap and water
  • if eyes are contaminated, rinse with tap water or saline
  • if blood gets in mouth, spit it out then rinse with water repeatedly
  • refer the employee being treated for medical assessment
  • report incident to management
  • maintain confidentiality regarding treatment and exposure
 

Cleaning

  • where possible use single-use disposable sterile items
  • have soiled linen laundered separately from other laundry items
  • clean and disinfect all soiled items
  • sterilise non-disposable items of equipment
  • dispose of sharps in an approved sharps container
  • store instruments in a clean, dry environment
  • keep first aid room clean and free from non-essential items
