First Aid Kit

A first aid kit should be available in the first aid room. Contents of first aid kits should be suitable to the type of work carried out at the workplace. The following items represent a basic first aid kit:

For use by person giving
first aid

  • first aid manual
  • disposable gloves
  • surgical face mask
  • face goggles
  • resuscitation face shield/mask
  • scissors (disposable)
  • Splinter probes (disposable)
  • set of basic first aid notes
  • the names and phone numbers of workplace first aid officers
  • telephone number for nearest doctor (medical centre)
  • the telephone numbers for the emergency services
  • record book for recording details of first aid treatments given

Minor cuts,
eye injuries

  • antiseptic swabs
  • sodium chloride ampules
  • gauze pads
  • individually wrapped sterile adhesive dressings
  • sterile eye pads
  • non-allergenic tape

Larger, more serious wounds

  • sterile covering for serious wounds
  • sterile un-medicated wound dressings, small, medium and large
  • emergency shock blanket
  • light crepe bandages
  • amputation bag set

Pressure or limb support bandages

  • heavy crepe bandage
  • triangular bandage
