Kitchen Electrical Safety

Possible solutions

Check it

Clearing food debris from kitchen appliances

(eg. toaster)

  • Electric shock due to inserting knives forks into insides of kitchen appliances which may be 'live'.
  • Promote awareness to safe procedures for cleaning/clearing electrical kitchen appliances,
ie. switch off and disconnect from power supply before working on internal parts of appliance.

Liquid spillages

  • Electric shock due to contact with an electric appliance made 'live' after liquid has been spilt over it.
  • Alert staff for need to keep liquids well away from electrical kitchen appliances, and to mop up any spillages immediately these occur, after making sure the power supply has been disconnected.

Condition of appliances

  • Electric shock due to contact with a faulty or broken appliance or its power supply plug or cord.
  • Have all portable kitchen appliances inspected, tested and tagged on a regular basis.
  • Where equipment is identified for repair, it should be immediately removed from service and appropriately labelled.

Extension leads

  • Electric shock due to contact with exposed wiring of damaged or poorly connected extension lead.
  • Use extension leads for temporary connection only, and not as a permanent means of supply.
  • If an extension lead has to be used and is exposed to foot traffic, make sure it is secured (taped down?) and protected from damage.

Overloading

  • Overloading power circuit by plugging too many appliances into same socket.
  • If additional appliances to be used regularly, install a larger power socket (eg. 4 - sockets).
  • Discourage the use of adaptors and connection of unauthorised appliances brought from home, which may overload the circuit dangerously.
