L-shaped workstations

  • Monitor screen too close to eyes.

  • Lifting heavy binders at arms length whilst remaining seated.

  • Performing written tasks to one side whilst remaining in keyboarding position.

  • Height adjusting handle located under desktop protrudes into knee space.
  • Move computer screen into corner angle where
    screen monitor can be set at correct distance.
  • Provide separate storage adjacent to desk, which requires rising from seat to fetch a binder.
  • Relocate non-essential 'clutter' from desk top,
    and set aside area for non-keyboarding tasks.
  • Raise height of desktops to provide clearance for knees. Use footstool to maintain correct posture.

Desks with no height adjustment

  • Screen too close to eyes.

  • Looking up at a screen which is set too high.
  • Using a keyboard which is too high when seated normally.
  • Move desk away from wall to increase distance.
  • Lower screen by removing processor beneath.
  • Install a sliding keyboard shelf under desk to allow keyboard to be used at a lower level.

Retractable keyboard shelves

  • Knees strike retractable keyboard shelf under desktop.
  • Replace desk with a height adjustable desk
    (or have desk height increased).
 

Knee space

  • Twisting body whilst performing non-keyboarding
    tasks due to lack of knee space.
  • Twisting body and bending to remove files from
    under desk drawer unit whilst still seated.
  • Corner or protruding handle of drawer unit .
  • Locate drawer unit at opposite end of desk from that used for non-keyboarding tasks.
  • Use a carpet protector mat and roll chair on it to a position where it is not necessary to twist & bend.
  • Select drawer units with rounded edges and
    non-projecting handles.
 

Use of chairs

  • Chair may roll away on carpet protector mat when user stands and is not there when user sits again.
  • Chair may catch on edge of carpet protector mat and tip.
  • Alert users of mats of risk of serious injury.

  • Alert users of mats of risk of serious injury.
