Photocopy Room Paper Shredding

Issue	Hazard	Solution	Check it
Incorrect use	Shredding materials other than paper, eg. staples, binding spirals Shredding too many sheets of paper at a time.	Post notice near shredder with a list of "Don'ts" as employees may not know machine capability. Provide a copy of the manufacturers operating manual or instructions for access by users.
Clothing	Loose ties and scarves whilst using shredder.	Attach notice to shredder adjacent to inlet slot cautioning users to avoid leaning over shredder whilst blades are running. Remove ties or scarves before using shredder.
Machine jams	Inserting fingers or poking other objects into blades in an attempt to clear a jam.	Follow instructions for clearing machine jams. Switch off power supply at wall before attempting to clear a jam. If unsuccessful, call for assistance from technical staff who maintain the shredding machine.
Container overfull	Machine does not shred paper properly when waste container is full.	Initiate a cycle of regular checking and emptying of shredding machines by services staff. Ensure employees know who to call to have the shredder emptied if it becomes full earlier.
Housekeeping	Non-shreddable residue discarded on floor adjacent to shredder (eg. staples, plastic).	Provide bin nearby for collection of waste. Include shredder on checklist for H&S inspection.
