Hazardous substances - What are the OHS risks?

Hazardous substances can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin and can cause immediate or long-term health problems, including:

  • poisoning
  • irritation
  • chemical burns
  • sensitisation
  • cancer
  • birth defects

They can also cause diseases of the skin, lungs, liver, kidneys and nervous system.

Levels of risk from hazardous substances vary. It depends on:

  • the substance, its form, concentration, toxicity, health effects, physical and chemical properties and
  • the nature of the work, how the substance is used or handled, quantities, routes of exposure etc
