As outlined in the Guidelines for Managing Vehicle Driver Fatigue (released by the National Transport Commission), fatigue can affect a person's health, reduce performance and productivity, and can increase the chance of a workplace accident or road crash.
Symptoms include poor judgement, slower reactions to events, and decreased skills, such as diminished ability to control a vehicle. Evidence also suggests that fatigued people are more likely to engage in risk-taking behaviour.
Work practices such as working long hours, prolonged night work, working irregular hours, and early starting times cause or contribute to insufficient or poor quality sleep.
