2008 Award Categories & Assessment Criteria

Category one - Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System*
This award recognises commitment to continually improving workplace health and safety outcomes through the implementation of an effective and integrated systems approach.
For entry in this category your submission must address the following criteria:
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous OHS improvement achieved through the implementation of a systematic approach to OHS management
- The extent of integration of OHS management into the overall operations and systems of the company
- Demonstrated improvement in OHS as a result of the integrated systems approach
- The extent of consultation and involvement of workplace parties and others to develop the integrated systems approach.
Nominations will be strengthened by supporting information that demonstrates your OHS management system, such as:
- A recent external audit report
- Details of OHS control measures in place
- Worker’s Compensation Claims data
- Details of OHS reporting and consultation
- Any other evidence to show a system based approach.
Category two - Best Solution to an Identified Workplace Health and Safety Issue*
This award recognises excellence in developing and implementing a solution to an identified OHS issue. Nominations for this award may focus on a particular initiative or activity, for example, a product solution, engineering innovation, a training program, an awareness raising activity or other control measure that reduces the risk of work-related injury and disease.
For entry in this category your submission must address the following criteria:
- The extent of the OHS issue and how it was identified
- The solution’s demonstrated effectiveness in controlling the identified hazard and its impact on the overall operations of the organisation
- Demonstrated improvement in OHS in the workplace as a result of the solution
- The extent of consultation and involvement of workplace parties and others, as appropriate, in the development of the solution
- The originality or innovative qualities of the solution and its potential for broader application across the industry.
Category three - Best Rehabilitation and Return to Work Program
This award recognises the parties involved in an outstanding rehabilitation and return to work program for injured seafarers and is open to employers and rehabilitation providers who have achieved excellent results.
For entry in this category your submission must address the following criteria:
- Demonstrated commitment to best practice, including early intervention
- Success in reducing claim duration that is attributable to the return to work program
- Success in achieving a durable return to work
- Employee involvement in the development of the program
- Seafarer satisfaction with the rehabilitation and return to work program.
Category four - Best Individual Contribution to Workplace Health and Safety*
This award recognises an individual seafarer or industry employee whose contribution has made an exceptional difference to OHS in their workplace.
For entry in this category your submission must address the following:
- The individual’s position and duties
- The individual’s OHS achievements/contributions and how they were accomplished
- Demonstrated improvement in OHS in the workplace as a result of the individual’s contribution
- The extent of any obstacles or barriers that were overcome by the individual in achieving OHS improvement
- The extent of the consultation led by the individual and the involvement of workplace parties and others
- The originality or innovative qualities of the individual’s contribution and its potential for broader application across the industry.
* The winners of Category one, two and four will be considered for the National Safe Work Australia Awards which are administered by the Australian Safety and Compensation Council (ASCC) and will be judged in early 2009.
