Seacare Update: Developments, issues and opportunities for the scheme and maritime industry Ms Teresa Hatch – Executive Director, Australian Shipowners Association Mr Henning Christiansen – Federal Secretary, Australian Institute of Marine and Power Engineers The Seacare Updates session has become a feature of the Seacare Conference and provides the opportunity for prominent industry figures to canvass major issues and developments that are affecting the Seacare scheme and the maritime industry generally. This year, there are a range of significant developments including the proposal to establish a single national ship safety jurisdiction for all commercial vessels, the Parliamentary examination of coastal trade, and the growth in the industry thus increasing demand for qualified seafarers. |

Keynote Presentation: High risk industries and improving OHS – organisational culture, leadership and creativity Prof Dennis Else – General Manager - Sustainability, Safety & Health, Brookfield Multiplex The maritime industry is acknowledged as a high-risk sector. Although there has been a good improvement in Seacare’s injury rates in recent years, opportunities remain for organisations to increase injury prevention and improve OHS performance. This presentation will discuss lessons to be learned from other high-risk industries including mining and construction. |

There are always opportunities to improve the design of workplaces and processes, and elimination is at the top of the hierarchy of controls, even in the maritime environment where vessel requirements may appear to be paramount. |
