The Seacare Updates session has become a feature of the Seacare Conference and provides the opportunity for prominent industry figures to canvass major issues and developments that are affecting the Seacare scheme and the maritime industry generally. This year, there are a range of significant developments including the proposal to establish a single national ship safety jurisdiction for all commercial vessels, the Parliamentary examination of coastal trade, and the growth in the industry thus increasing demand for qualified seafarers.

Keynote Presentation: High risk industries and improving OHS – organisational culture, leadership and creativity

Prof Dennis Else – General Manager - Sustainability, Safety & Health, Brookfield Multiplex

The maritime industry is acknowledged as a high-risk sector. Although there has been a good improvement in Seacare’s injury rates in recent years, opportunities remain for organisations to increase injury prevention and improve OHS performance. This presentation will discuss lessons to be learned from other high-risk industries including mining and construction.

Panel Discussion: Cost-effective risk management - safe design and ships

Mr Allan Schwartz – Manager - Ship Inspections Group, Australian Maritime Safety Authority

Mr Rodney Humphrey – Head of Approval - Sydney Maritime Centre, Det Norske Veritas

Dr Michelle Grech – Maritime Platforms Division, Defence Science and Technology Organisation, Department of Defence

Capt Neil Butt – Health, Safety, Quality and Environment Manager, Farstad Shipping (Indian Pacific)

Eliminating hazards through safe design is the most effective means of controlling risks and should always be the first option considered in injury prevention. There are always opportunities to improve the design of workplaces and processes, and elimination is at the top of the hierarchy of controls, even in the maritime environment where vessel requirements may appear to be paramount.
