Possible Controls
Electrically powered machines
- Staff are unfamiliar with equipment
- Electric machines left switched on after use (e.g. electric hole drilling machine)
- Ensure staff are appropriately trained in the correct use of equipment
- Ensure instructions are clearly displayed
- Select tools which have a warning lamp fitted
- Display appropriate signage for tools reminding users to switch off when finished
- Have all clamps and safety parts inspected periodically
Staplers
- Using a hand stapler with insufficient power may leave sharp points which can lacerate fingers
- Removing staples with fingernails may cause broken nails and cuts to fingertips
- Provide a range of hand staplers as required, plus an electric stapler for thick documents
- Provide a staple remover as standard stationery issue for workers
Paper guillotines
- Blade of guillotine falls whilst positioning paper and is a cutting hazard
- Blunt blade requires excessive force to operate
- Use a slide guillotine in place of the lever guillotine
- Consider providing guillotines with hand guards and blade locks
- Have guillotine blades inspected periodically and sharpened to ensure efficient operation
Laminators and binders
- Laminated documents come out too hot
- Hot parts of laminator accessible to touch
- Poor placement of binders causing users to reach
- Ensure there is sufficient space for laminated documents to cool
- Ensure the appropriate signage is displayed showing correct use of equipment
- Ensure appropriate signage indicates hot parts of laminator not to be touched
- Ensure equipment is placed at the appropriate height and on a level surface to reduce the need for users to over extend reaching for equipment
Scissors, knives
- Inappropriate use of knife or scissors
- Knife or scissors falls from workbench or high shelf
- Provide cutting utensils on a fit for purpose basis
- Consider purchasing cutting implements with safety features
- Store sharp objects in a tidy, accessible and easily visible area
