Individual Contribution Award: Petty Officer Cameron Symons - Video transcript

Petty Officer Cameron Symons from Royal Australian Navy.

Petty Officer Cameron Symons joined the School of Survivability and Ship Safety as the principle Fire Fighting instructor.

After observing a pattern of deterioration in the physical and mental condition of his students upon leaving their units, he researched information and data for the safe conduct of activities in high temperature environments.

Petty Officer Symons went above the duties of his normal position and implemented a heat management tool, designed and fit for purpose.

He collaborated with Fire and Rescue New South Wales and the University of Wollongong. Since implementing the system, he has seen a cultural change across the school with the heat management tool now written into standard operating procedures, and an overall improvement in students wellbeing.

Petty Officer Symons has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to safety and has since been contacted by other training facilities to roll out the procedures across other areas of Defence.
