Comcare's Guide to Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace

Overview

The (Cth) Work Health Safety Act 2011 requires that PCBUs must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that all people at the workplace are not exposed to health and safety risks from the work carried out by that business or undertaking. PCBUs in general have a good understanding of preventing and managing the risks of physical harm to workers, but many find identifying and managing risks to psychological health challenging.

This course focuses on preventing psychological harm to workers using a risk management approach. Participants will consider potential hazards in their own workplaces that arising from work related stress, job design, organisational change and poor workplace relationships.

Early intervention to manage psychosocial risks will be explored, with the anticipation that participants return to their workplaces and influence the review and improvement of existing work health safety management systems.

The session also concentrates on providing support for coworkers with psychological health concerns. This includes both encouraging managerial support and providing workplace adjustments, modifications and suitable duties. High level requirements of employers under the Safety Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 will also be discussed in relation to workers compensation in the Commonwealth jurisdiction.
