Extreme weather

Australia’s variable climate produces a variety of extreme weather hazards. Learn how to manage the work health and safety risks that arise when these hazards affect workers and workplaces.

Understand your WHS duties and how to manage workplace risks relating to extreme weather.

Extreme heat is a critical health and safety hazard in many workplaces, whether work is performed indoors or outdoors.

Bushfires pose a significant hazard in Australia. While the hazard peaks during summer, bushfires can occur at any time of the year.

Floods and flood clean-up can expose workers to a wide range of risks, from isolation and mental stress through to infection from exposure to contaminated water.

Particularly in the warmer months, cyclones and thunderstorms produce hazards like extreme winds and heavy rainfall.

Working in very cold temperatures can be harmful. PCBUs must manage WHS risks caused by exposure to cold weather.
